Sydney based yoga teacher turned yoga-wear designer Marina Jacoby, created her own collection when she realised “there was nothing out there that made me feel beautiful when I did yoga or worked out. I wanted to lift women up physically with my sculpted designs and in turn, lift women up emotionally.”

Not just for those who practice yoga, the high quality ‘uplifting’ fabric helps to hold in the body which means that it is perfect to dance in, to run in or to stretch in. So much so, that the new and revolutionary range sold out twice last year!

This month we went behind the scenes with the brands creator – Marina Jacoby:

B&L: What made you choose to start your own yoga wear range?

Marina: I knew there was a simple way to make women look and feel beautifully feminine when they did yoga and worked out – I used to look at tops and think “why can’t they put a proper in-built bra so I can wear a halter neck top to do my 5km run in?”  “Why can’t they make pants that flatter my hips so when I bend over I keep my modesty but they still make me look fabulous?” 

The yoga and sportswear I found just seemed to be more about designing for the look on the hanger rather than to fit a woman’s body. 

B&L: Is your range just for the superfit? 

Marina: As one of my size 14 customers says “your pants give me a bum lift – thanks heaps!”  The material we use was actually designed originally for old people in hospitals to help improve their circulation – with the cut of Marina J Wear (our tops do not ride up when you lift your arms as they sit on your hips and are more generous around the belly) and the ingenious design a lot of our customers look super fit when in fact they are not!

B&L: What makes Marina J different ? 

Marina: We don’t actually focus on what other companies are doing so I can’t comment on what we do differently.  We focus on what women want 100%.  I can tell you that I have taught yoga for 11 years, so Marina J is designed by a yoga teacher & trained dancer for yoga, dancing and sport. 

We sold out twice last year, just from word of mouth and the dancers on the TV Show “SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE AUSTRALIA?” have been wearing Marina J live on TV – so the clothes seem to appeal to a wide range of women from young professional dancers to a group of 65 year old women who bought Marina J to do their boxing classes in!

B&L: How would you describe your collection? 

Marina: It’s a collection of clothes that make women feel confident.  That’s why we named our collections “Supreme Goddess” for our baby pink lace collection and “Sensual Goddess for our plain black collection” and so on. 

I want women to feel proud in their bodies, to be able to walk down the street after a workout and to know they look as good as they are feeling inside.

B&L: Why did you choose to support the “International Women’s Development Agency?”

Marina: The IWDA support grass roots charities across Australasia from micro finance for women to freeing and rehabilitating little girls and women who have been sold into prostitution often by their families.  I love this charity! 

They focus on women creating a life they will flourish in – which is my philosophy also – time is precious and we women are so powerful when we get together to create what we want.

It’s so easy to drop down and feel upset at all that is wrong but that will not change this world!  I want to leave this world in better shape than when I found it and this charity is doing it in such a strong, feminine way.

B&L: What is your Goddess philosophy? 

Marina: That pleasure is a woman’s birthright! I think most women are starving for pleasure.  It’s like a muscle, too much compromise and putting others first and it becomes slack.  Then the next time your partner asks you what you really want to do Friday night you settle for a video and take out. How about “I want you to massage my feet with warm oil, look deeply into my eyes and really see me” ahhh....or “I want to sit naked at the table except for a pair of heels and I want you to feed me morsels of food whilst making me laugh madly”

But would a man really want to do all this for me?  YES!  Men want us to be happy, who told you this was too much to ask?  Become the Goddess you already are. Go see the film that makes you cry, go volunteer at the homeless shelter, do whatever gives you pleasure and do it a lot.

B&L: What is your favourite item from your collection? 

Marina: My Flirty Goddess Halter Top – I wear it the most I love it! Love it! Love it!

B&L: Do you have any advice for women who would like to try yoga?  

Marina: Yes, find a teacher who inspires you.  Yoga is peace and happiness, go find a class that gives you that, there are lots of amazing teachers out there. 

B&L: Where do you get your inspiration? 

Marina: From the way things make me feel. Designs for clothes just pop into my head.  They always have, ever since I was a little girl, but I have only just started listening!

My own life inspires me, a woman jogging past me looking uncomfortable makes me think “she could look and feel so much better in ...”  when I get my hair done and I feel like a million dollars... when I hear about little girls and women in Cambodia rescued from brothels and then years later leaving the charity to run their own successful businesses.....when I am quiet and alone and I think about how amazing we women are, a beautiful top will pop into my head and I will draw it and get all excited.  I haven’t thought about this before – I suppose it’s when my heart is lifted.

B&L: What’s next for Marina J?   

Marina: To “lift” more women up around the world, both in our designs and for the women who need the support of the IWDA.  We donate to the IWDA with each purchase our customers make so our dream is to help as many women we can! 

We are also introducing new colours in the next year which will be very exciting.

B&L: What does being a woman mean to you?   

Marina: Everything!  I love being a woman. I have sensuality at my fingertips I have the ability to be lifted up just by another women’s mood, I have everything I need right inside of me and I get to have a beautiful man by my side to support me create the life of my dreams. 

I get to have woman’s intuition, I get to nurture my daughter with my feminine wisdom and grow and learn with each fragile step she takes.  I get to be the Goddess I always knew I was but was too scared to unleash!
