Hunting: How To Find The Right Job For You
by Sharon Jacobsen
Job hunting can be a daunting task but it can be made easier if
you know exactly what kind of job you're looking for.
Before you get started, take some time to think through exactly
what you want from a job and target your applications to fit your
needs.
Questions you should ask yourself are:
The Position
• What kind of work do you want to do?
• Is there a particular type of company or organisation you'd
prefer to work for?
• Is there a particular industry you'd be happiest working
within?
• Would you prefer to work in the public or private sector?
Or do you have no preference at all?
• Do you want to remain in your current field of employment
or are you looking for a 'new start'?
Location
• How far are you prepared to travel?
• Are there any areas where you won't work?
• Is it important you can reach your place of work using public
transport?
• Are you able to re-locate?
• Could you commute on a weekly basis?
Salary
• Do you need a salary increase?
• Are you willing to take a drop in salary?
• Could you take a drop in salary if other bonuses were offered?
If so, what bonuses would they be?
• What is the absolute minimum you could accept?
Working Conditions
• Do you want to work set hours, a shift pattern or do you
prefer flexi-time?
• Are you happiest working in a team or do you prefer to be
alone?
• Do you prefer a job with a regular routine?
• Are you looking for a position that carries responsibility?
• Should there be opportunities for promotion?
• Do you want ongoing training?
• Do you mind wearing a uniform?
• Are you able to travel if necessary?
• Would you prefer a job that offers opportunities for travel?
Miscellaneous Factors
• What are you personal values? Will you be happy working
for a company that sells alcohol or produces drugs tested on animals?
• Decide where you won't work.
• How about going self-employed on a contract basis? Is that
an option?
• Do you want to be part of a team that socialises outside
of the workplace?
You're going to be spending a huge percentage of your time at your
place of work so it's important you find a job that suits you.
Job satisfaction can only be achieved when you're doing what you
want to do in a place where you're happy to be. By asking yourself
the right questions beforehand, you can make sure that your next
job is exactly the right job for you.
