how to get a good night's sleep

Having a good night’s rest will make you feel fresh and revitalized. Many people have trouble sleeping, which can make you feel moody and lethargic the next day.

If you find it difficult to sleep properly, here are a few tips which might help:

Cut Out Caffeine

Coffee and soft drink contain caffeine which will keep you awake. If you can’t avoid them completely, keep them for daytime use only.

That might be obvious, but what you may not know is that smoking before bed can also keep you awake due to the stimulants in nicotine. Just one more reason to give up the habit!

Warm Milk and Honey

A warm drink can relax your body and get you ready for sleep. The best choice is a warm milk with a teaspoon of honey. It is not a good idea to go to bed on a full stomach, but you don’t want to be starving either, so milk is a good choice as it helps to calm and relax.

Get into a Routine

If you go to bed at the same time every night, your body will get into a healthy sleep routine. Try to wake up at the same time, even on weekends, and you will soon notice you fall asleep more quickly.

Cut Out Those Naps

An occasional nap is ok, but if you are having them on a regular basis it will put your body clock out of rhythm. If you are feeling particularly tired, try to limit your naps to less than 30 minutes. This is usually enough to refresh and revive you, without affecting your nightly sleep.

Read a Book or Magazine

The aim is to try and relax your mind, so choose something that isn’t too stimulating. Browsing a magazine is good, or reading a book that isn’t too action packed!

Don’t exercise before Bed

Try to exercise at least a few hours before going to sleep, if you workout late at night your body will have trouble knowing that it is time to switch off.

The Bed is for Sleeping

Don’t do work in bed…keep it for sleeping. Make it a relaxing, soft environment, and make sure it is a suitable temperature for sleeping in. Stress can prevent you from sleeping, so try to leave it outside the door.

Have a Warm Bath

A warm bath will help calm and relax you. If you have a partner, ask them to give you a gentle foot or back massage before bed, as that is a great way to relieve tension from your body.

See Your Doctor

For more serious sleep problems, a trip to the doctor may help. Your body needs proper rest to be able to function properly, so it is important to get the problem fixed.
