By Walter Mosley
ISBN: 978-0-7475-9187-0
RRP: AUD $23.95
A sexy noir novel from a master of American fiction, in which the darkest secrets are the ones we keep hidden from ourselves.
Diablerie isn’t the kind of book I am usually drawn to; I am a chick lit girl at heart but decided to try something different.
The author, Walter Mosley is one of Bill Clinton’s favourites and is a well known crime writer in the US.
Diablerie is the story of Ben Dibbuk, he has a beautiful wife and daughter but is living a life without any emotion or passion. Ben gets a visit from his past and discovers secrets from his youth that he can’t seem to remember.
He struggles with the new knowledge as he tries to work out what is real. Ben is not a lovable character but you can emphasise with his plight. This is a dark novel but the ending might surprise you.
Well written and a good quick read, I found myself engrossed in the story and it was hard to put down.
Diablerie is full of interesting non-traditional characters, which I think is what gives it appeal. It isn’t gruesome or an “edge of your seat thriller” but it is quite dark and gloomy without being overbearingly so - a unique read.
