The random currents of life saw Bachelor (Pty Ltd) cofounders Andrew Coates and Christian Purdon washed ashore on the alien banks of The Mighty Peel River over a decade ago.
Although possessing a mutual respect for tradition and institution, their contempt for blind conformity found them rarely steering the middle course. Like the proverbial fish on a bicycle the impetus to evolve was set.
The ensuing years shone an eclectic array of influences upon the pair culminating in the creation of the bachLR label, a brand encapsulating the eternal bachelor ethos.
Q: What is the inspiration behind bachLR?
A: Having been continually frustrated by a distinct lack of footwear options for men that were more grown up than a basketball court but not restricted to a formal office. We set about creating a range that provided casual, comfortable appeal together with a refined individual style.
Q: How would you describe your current collection -
A: Unique!.................... “Calamity on Peel”, influenced by the timeless philosophy of the urban bachelor, is a collection encompassing elements of individuality, versatility and an almost contemptuous regard for conformity, balanced with an understated refinement.
Q: Price range -
A: $179 - $199
Q: Current followers of bachLR -
A: The bachLR range is available in most capital cities across Australia and our database has a number of international followers. We’re told David Mohato Bereng Seeiso likes to wear a pair of bachLR Casual Slips in his Jacuzzi.
Q: Future -
A: Slippers with zippers made from the skin of kippers.
Q: 3 fave grooming tips -
A: 1. Fresh razors over electric.
2. Cade range by L’Occitane
3. Keep rogue body hair in check!
Q: 3 fave fashion tips -
A:
1. Avoid wearing a Crème knit to a goth concert.
2. Sharp shoes
3. Tailor - so everything fits to perfection.
Q: Biggest fashion mistake -
A: Chris: Wore a Crème SportsCraft Knit to a Cure concert.
Andrew: Wore a “flanno” on a first date. I took the suggestion of a casual dinner far too seriously. I think I may have even tucked it in…..agherrrrr.
Q: Words of wisdom to up and coming designers -
A: Don’t be swayed by the mainstream and the naysayers. Get in and have a go.
Q: Autumn / Winter 2007 forecast –
A: Regarding men’s footwear; low profiles, long refined sleek lines continuing. Grey and mushroom tones with the occasional hint of muted patterns are our preference.
