After The Rice

by Wendy French

Megan Ismore's bungalow isn't big enough to house her problems, or her relatives.

Married just ten months, her life with Matt would be grand if it weren't for a fast-growing secret she can't bear to share.
As if that weren't enough, she's dealing with his belching Uncle Tony, residing on an air mattress in the basement, and her sister Andrea, a roving hippie, nesting on their couch. Never mind dueling mothers-in-law, hell bent on double-booking the newlyweds, an incontinent terrier, and a randy best friend (working overtime to get pregnant).

As midterm exams are about to begin, Megan's un-weaned infant niece (aka The Pink Tyrant) is left in her care, and there's no time to spare for re-examining her life. Between the demands of her family and a gigantic decision only she and Matt can make, Megan finds herself in a state of marital chaos she never imagined, but must somehow manage.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

After The Rice

Megan and Matt always dream about running away from their families…

For Megan things seem to keep turning from bad to worse, although she has a great relationship with her partner Matt, everything else surrounding her is chaotic. While trying to study for her exams, having family move in with them, and keeping a secret from her husband, I am surprised, but delighted that she managed to stay as sane as she did!

I really got into this book, it made me laugh, and some of the characters really made me cringe with their actions. We all have family, and this novel is very close to home for a lot of people.
I really enjoyed reading it, not a typical love story, this book has something extra.
Megan has a really loveable personality, and someone we can all relate to.

This is the first novel by Wendy French that I have read, and if it is anything to go by, I would love to read others. For me, it was all about the dysfunctional families, and the wide variety of characters, which really captured my attention.
